Basic Surgical Skills Training
Objectives and Requirements
In the UK the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Basic Surgical Skills Course is now a mandatory component of the structured training programme for trainee Obstetrician/Gynaecologists. Birmingham Women’s Hospital is an approved Centre and aims to deliver the necessary training as prescribed by the RCOG.

3rd & 4th DegreePerineal Tear Course - 15 October 2012
Obstertric and sphincter disruption is a major cause of anal incontinence. There is compelling evidence that clinicians are inadequately trained to recognize and repair the anal injuries.
This course is essential for all doctors practicing obstetrics and repairing perineal tears but will also be useful to midwives, Labour Ward Managers and Colorectal Surgeons

Hands-on Training Course - Laparoscopic Treatment of Ectopic Pregnancy - date to be arranged
This course has been developed specifically for SpR's & SHO's who wish to hve practical training for dealing with ectopic pregnancy. You will have hands-on training for different modalities of treatment of ectopic pregnancy including the use of the Endo-Loop, Bipolar, Monopolar & Ligation. Also included are the techniques & practic for Laparoscopic Salpingostomy & Retrieval of the sac.

Hands on Laboratory Training in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery - 11 - 15 June 2012
This course is conducted by Mr Yousri Afifi, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with a special interest in Minimal Access and Reproductive Surgery, and College Tutor
The course aims to provide hands on advanced laparoscopic skills on a one to one basis with more time allocated for practical. This course is ideal for trainees who wish to complete the Laparoscopic Surgery Advanced Training Module. The course is held over 5 days,.

Laparoscopic Suturing Course - Course organiser Mr Y Afifi - 9 - 10 June 2012
This is a two day intensive hands on practical workshop with personal tuition from experts. This course will be of gret value to Gynaecologists, Surgeons and Urologists. Laparoscopic suturing is an essential skill for an accomplished laparoscopic surgeon. This not only enables a surgeon to deal with advanced laparoscopic operations but also gives much needed confidence. The workshop will provide maximum use of laboratory time, practice on models and animal tissue, one to one teaching, intensive practical exercises in clearly demonstrated steps, video sessions and live demonstrations for suturing techniques and competency assessment.

This course addresses modern surgical approaches to the management of abnormal uterine bleeding and commonly encountered uterine pathologies in a outpatient hysteroscopy setting within the context of the 21st Century delivery of health services.

Consultant Interview Preparation Course -dates to be arranged
This course is aimed at Senior StRs who are applying for their first Consultant post. Lectures will be given by the Chief Executive, Medical Director and other senior educationalists covering topics such as clinical governance and topical, specialty related issues Information will be given on how to prepare for and what to expect during the pre-interview visit. One week prior to the course all candidates will be given a mock job description, personal specifications for the post and a presentation topic. During the course each candidate will be expected to give their presentation and attend a mock interview. Individual feedback will be given to each candidate.

GP Study Days - Date in May 2012 to be arranged
This study day is designed exclusively for GP's. The programme has been organised by Mr Najum Qureshi, Lead for Postgraduate Education, Birmingham Women's NHS Foundation Trust, The topics being covered on this Study Day are Management of the infertile couple, Paediatric Gynaecology, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Family Planning, HPV testing and its relevance to screening. All topics follow a fixed pattern ie: lectures followed by small group discussions which are designed to be more effective and suitable for local clinical needs.
