Is the Birth Centre / Home the right place for me to have my baby?

Yes!  If before labour starts :

You have no complications (either medically or otherwise), that have been identified in your history; you have a normal pregnancy and you anticipate a normal birth
You are between the ages of 16 and 40 years
You have a body mass index in the normal range (18-35)
You are having a baby in the head down position
Your placenta is not low lying
You do not have Group B streptococcus infection during this pregnancy
You have normal iron levels in your blood (9.5 or above) and there are no concerns about your blood clotting normally
Your baby arrives between 37-42 weeks

Around the time of birth:

You have had a normal blood pressure throughout your pregnancy and it is normal when you arrive in labour with no protein in your urine
You have a well grown baby and the midwife assesses that your baby is a suitable size for your body
  • You start labour naturally

                 or

You are induced because you are over your due date (with up to two pessaries of prostin) and become established in your labour

If your waters break:

  • You go into labour naturally within 24 hours of your waters breaking

If you choose to await events and decline the recommended antibiotics and continuous fetal heart rate monitoring, the Birth may still be an option if you go into labour within 72 hours

Your baby is making normal movements
