Information Governance Toolkit

As a key part of the Information Governance agenda, the Department of Health and the NHS Connecting for Health  jointly produced an Information Governance Toolkit. This web-based tool was launched in late 2003, and currently represents Department of Health policy as at 30th May 2007.

The Toolkit has been made available to assist organisations to achieve the aims of Information Governance, and  currently encompasses:

  • Information Governance Management
  • The Confidentiality NHS Code of Practice
  • Data Protection Act 1998
  • Information Security
  • Information Quality
  • Records Management
  • Freedom of Information Act 2000

The Toolkit covers these area as a set of six initatives:

  • Information Governance Management
  • Confidentiality and Data Protection Assurance = Confidentiality NHS Cofe of Practice & Data protection Act 1998
  • Information Security assurance = Information Security Management NHS Code of Practice
  • Clinical Information Assurance - Health Records Management & Records Management NHS Code of Practice
  • Secondary Uses Assurance = Information Quality & Payment By Results
  • Corporate Information Assurance = Freedom of Information Act 2000, Corporate Records Management & Records Management NHS Code of Practice

The Toolkit also contains specific organsiational views. It is the tool by which organisations can assess their compliance with current legislation, standards and national guidance.
