Microbiology

The Microbiology department is concerned with the detection, isolation and identification of micro-organisms that cause disease in humans. Any part of the human body, whether tissue or fluid can be examined, and these tissue or fluid swabs may be inoculated onto culture media to allow the micro-organisms to grow after incubation.

Tests are carried out to determine the identity of the organism, and the sensitivity of an organism to a range of currently used antibiotics. This information is provided to the clinicians enabling them to make a decision on the correct management and care of patients.  The Microbiology Department also plays a key central role in the control of hospital infection.

Quality of service is continually maintained by effective internal quality control measures, participation in Clinical Pathology accreditation and External Quality Assurance schemes.
