BIRMINGHAM CYTOLOGY TRAINING CENTRE
Birmingham Cytology Training Centre first opened in the early 1960s. The training was inspired by Betty Attwood who was a pioneer in the field of cervical cytology, having been trained herself by George Papanicolaou, in New York. We have seen many changes since we began and have assisted in the training of cytologists worldwide.
Our resources are being continuously updated and modernised. A database of all material used has been created allowing the production of new bespoke Workshops, Teaching Sets and Assessment Sets. The development of this resource database has enabled us to respond to the needs of individual laboratories. Test or teaching sets can be customised at the request of Training Officers to assess and/or develop a screener’s skill in specific areas.
Our purpose-built Training Centre was completed in June 2004 and has two well-equipped seminar rooms. These rooms can be used for formal lectures and practical microscopy sessions, as well as more informal group tuition and multiheader-led training.
We have a dedicated team of medical, technical and administrative staff. We also have the support of many visiting lecturers who assist us in delivering a full range of subjects and workshops.
