Research interests
I established my major research interest on the changes in the female pelvis due to childbirth. This project is continued until March 1998 (see publications) and culminated in the awarding of my doctorate in Medicine in 2003. This theme was continued by my first research fellow who was awarded her MD for her thesis in ultrasound of the anal sphincter immediately after childbirth.

Since taking up post as a consultant I have continued to be research active and published more than 25 peer reviewed papers and over 30 published abstracts at National and International meetings. I have written invited articles & book chapters in over 6 publications. I have supervised several audits (including outcomes of TVT and infection after urodynamics) and a national survey (of current practice in UDA and compliance with a MDA directive).

I have taught Nationally and Internationally and frequently been an invited speaker at various meetings including ICS &IUGA (see page 20)

Major Research Themes

1. Detrusitol for mixed incontinence (phase IV) (MERIT trial)

2. A novel compund for sensory and motor urgency (Nitric oxide flurbuprofine) (phase II)

3. Propiverine chloride for urge incontinence (phase IV)

4. A novel Potassium channel opener for detrusor overactivity (phase II)

5. An alpha blocker for detrusor overactivity (post marketing phaseII)

6. Duloxatine for stress incontinence (phase III)

7. A novel M3 specific anticholinergic for detrusor overactivity (phase III) (STAR study)

8. Randomised placebo controlled trial of Botox? for idiopathic detrusor overactivity

9. Phase IV study of fesoterodine in the elderly

10. Phase II study of Pregabalin in post operative pain relief

11. Phase II study of a novel compound (vitamin D analogue) on detrusor overactivity

12. Phase IV study Sofia looking at fesoterodine in the elderly

1. I recently finished a 2 year follow up to a multicentre study comparing the use of SIS mesh in re-do pelvic floor surgery. The full manuscript should be submitted for publication in 2009

2. CARPET study a pilot study evaluating the feasibility of colposuspension vs anterior repair and TVT for the treatment of concurrent prolapse and stress incontinence. Manuscript submitted

3. Comparison of Spinal vs local anaesthetic for retropubic tape surgery for stress incontinence.

4. RELAX study placebo controlled RCT of Botulinum toxin A therapy in refractory detrusor overactivity.

1. Prolong study. This is a large prospective cohort study following up over 12,000 women who gave birth around 1995. This study is coordinated by the University of Aberdeen

Grants

1. Randomised placebo controlled trial of Botulinum toxin A for detrusor overactivity in women.

2. Longitudinal study of pelvic floor dysfunction and childbirth.

3. MRC grant 73379 pilot study of colposuspension versus TVT and anterior repair

for concurrent stress incontinence and anterior vaginal compartment prolapse.

4. Changes in the 3 dimensional ultrasound appearances of the urethra and anal sphincter from childbirth.
